National Public Lands Day – Sponsors Needed

25 08 2009

National Public Lands Day (Sept. 26) is the nation’s largest hands-on volunteer effort to improve and enhance the public lands Americans enjoy. In 2008, 120,000 volunteers built trails and bridges, removed trash and invasive plants, and planted over 1.6 million trees.1a2wnpld_logo

Roanoke City Parks & Recreation is organizing a volunteer workday at Carvins Cove to celebrate the event and they are looking for local individuals and businesses to help sponsor the day’s events. If you are interested email me (pete@roanoke.org) and I’ll put you in touch with the the right people.

This is a great opportunity to support Carvins Cove (2nd largest municipal park in the U.S.) and our public lands in general.  The day will consist of hands-on trail improvements and nature-based activities for parents and children brought to you by KIVA (Kids in the Valley Adventuring). All participants receive a t-shirt that will include sponsors name/logo.

Get involved, Get outside!

Riders Up Outfitters says “Don’t Forget About Us”

24 08 2009

I hope you read the Outdoors Businesses Paddling Toward Prosperity article by Roanoke Times reporter Duncan Adams. If not, see my previous post.

It is a great article talking about the James River and the economic benefits the outdoors brings to our region – it is assets and amenities like this that make the Roanoke Region such a great place to live, work, and play. Soon after the article came out I was contacted by Riders Up Outfitters with a proposition.

Outdoor Businesses Paddling Toward Prosperity

24 08 2009

The Roanoke Times wrote a great article highlighting the economic importance of the outdoors and profiles the James River (see below).  The James River is an incredibly beautiful river that everyone should experience!

Roanoke’s Junior Cycling Team

19 08 2009

I bet you didn’t know Roanoke has a Junior Cycling Team – neither did I until I met Wake Fulp!

Wake works at East Coasters Bike Shop and was inspirational in creating the Junior Cycling Team.  I think that it is businesses like East Coasters, groups like the Blue Ridge Bicycle Club, and people like Wake that make our outdoor scene so great.

I asked Wake to share with me (and you) what the Junior Cycling Team is all about:

Cycling Blog Header Pic2

“In January of this year East Coasters Bicycles and the Blue Ridge Bicycle Club have partnered to form a Junior Cycling Team. The purpose of this team is to give youth an organized and viable outlet in which they can experience the joys of cycling here in the Roanoke Valley. We work with kids from the ages of 10 to 18, both boys and girls by providing weekly group rides that will accommodate any skill level. Read the rest of this entry »

If you have yet to take the Marine Mud Run Challenge, you’re missing out on the cleanest fun you’ll ever have with a 5K race! As you will see from the pictures on our web site, it’s a pretty muddy affair. Many folks ask, just how tuff is the course? We reply, it’s as hard or easy as you want it to be! We have semi-pro runners down to the neighbor next door that has never entered a 5k race. Individual and 5 Person Team races and a Pollywog Jog for 12 yrs. and under. One thing is for sure if you run this race the Marines will see to it that you finish it. Part of the Marines creed is to never leave another Marine behind. And for this event we will never leave a runner behind! Visit the official Mud Run website for details and to register.
